The Hempstead County 4-H Horse Club, the Rowdy Young Riders, recently held their last play day of the 2018 season at the Rafter J Cowboy Church Arena.
Over 40 4-H kids from ages 2-18 competed in rodeo type events such as Barrel Racing, Pole Bending and Goat Tying. In addition to competing in the events over the season, 4-H members also learn about taking care of their horses and equipment.
The club’s leader, Lacey Jo Singleton, said the group raised over $19,000 through entry fees, raffles and sponsorships. The funds raised go toward awards for the kids who have participated. belt buckles, halters, breast collars and other horse related items will be given to each 4-H member that participated in at least five of the ten play days held during the year. The club will hold an awards banquet this winter to present all awards earned.
Other leaders in the club assisting Lacey Jo, are Vince and Tracy Grimes, Lawanda and Lonnie Friend, Chris and Jennifer Ghormley, Jamie Formby, Belinda Formby and Nancy and Sheriff James Singleton.
