Margaret Stokes McBrayer of Prescott, Arkansas, passed away May 27, 2017 at the age of 85. She was born July 20, 1931 in the Bluff Springs community to Allie Ghormley Stokes and Fred Carol Stokes.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Mary Jean Avery and brother James Stokes.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Jimmy McBrayer, son Tim McBrayer (Debra), grandsons Ryan and Trent, great-granddaughters Ava and Lilly, sisters, Joy Cox and Louis Willis, all of Nevada County.

Having lived in Nevada County all her life, Margaret knew and was known by many in the area. Those closest to her called her Rocky and Mamaw Rocky. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Prescott for more than 50 years. Margaret worked at Guthrie’s Drug Store when Prescott’s downtown was a bustling place and later at Beth’s clothing store; and wherever she was, she was always quick to joke and share laughter. She also never had any trouble giving her opinion. Margaret would always let you know where she stood and where you stood in her estimation. As a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she devoted herself to her family.

She always spoke of her son, daughter-in-law, grandsons and great-granddaughters with pride and affection. One of the ways Margaret showed her love for others was in her kitchen. She was always ready to bring food to the church for bereaved families, and her holiday dinners, which took days to prepare, and always featured everyone’s favorites. While her door was always open, she might, however, scold a thoughtless niece or nephew who dropped by unannounced and left her no time to prepare a full meal with vegetables from Jimmy’s garden and a fresh pan of cornbread. Throughout her life, Margaret McBrayer always spoke plainly, but to those she cared for in a special way, she declared her love not so much in words as in countless loving deeds.

A private family service was held Sunday, May 28, 2017, at Pharr Funeral Home in Prescott, AR, under the direction of Pharr Funeral Home.
