UPDATED 12:30 p.m. May, 12: Arkansas State Police and local law enforcement arrested James Arthur Bowden, 42, at 2:40 p.m. this afternoon after a five hour standoff. Bowden was taken into custody at the residence at 12084 Gum Springs Rd for the murder of Yell County Sheriff’s Deputy Lieutenant Kevin Mainhart and two other unnamed individuals.



Yell County, AR – A suspect is in custody after the killing of Yell County Deputy Kevin C. Mainhart, 46, and two unidentified individuals this morning in Yell County.

According to the Arkansas State Police, Lieutenant Mainhart was killed around 7:18 a.m. Thursday, May 11 during a traffic stop on Highway 27 near Slo-Fork Rd just west of Dardanelle. Lieutenant Mainhart intiated a traffic stop after encountering a vehicle believed to be associated with a disturbance call at 10024 Gum Springs Rd. During the stop the Lieutenant was fatally shot. A passing driver stopped at the scene a short time later and notified local law enforcement.

Law enforcement also located two deceased individuals outside the Gum Springs Rd residence where the disturbance call originated.

State Police and Yell County Deputies identified a location where they believed the suspect to be located. The suspect was later taken into custody.

In a statement released from the office of Attorney General Rutledge, the AG said, “Anytime a member of law enforcement falls in the line of duty, our hearts are broken. Today, the State of Arkansas mourns the loss of Yell County Sheriff’s Deputy Lt. Kevin Mainhart. As an officer of the law, Lt. Mainhart began his day with one mission: to protect and serve the people of his community. While today will mark his end of watch, he never wavered in his steadfast commitment and responsibility to safeguard his neighbors from harm. As Arkansas’s chief law enforcement officer, I extend my thoughts and prayers to Lt. Mainhart’s family, friends and brothers and sisters in law enforcement across our State, as well as the others who have been injured, brutally attacked and killed in today’s tragic incident in Chickalah.”
