Thunderstorms moving through the area dumped heavy rains causing localized flooding and washing out at least one highway in Hempstead County.

There have been reports of flooding closing Highway 355 South in Fulton and at least two cars stalling out in the flood waters. Hempstead County Road 21 was reported to be flooded by the Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office.

The worst case so far is on Highway 299 going toward Emmet about a mile east of exit 36 on I-30. The flooded creek completely washed out the highway. A man discovered it after driving his truck off into the raging waters. According to the State Police, the man was able to escape his truck without injury but the truck was carried from the highway into the woods by the flood.

Highway Department crews and law enforcement are out and working to put out barricades and signs to prevent drivers from driving into dangerous conditions.

We will update as more information comes in and try to keep the public up-to-date on road conditions. If you notice hazards due to the rains, notify the Hope Police Department dispatch at 870-777-3434 and email us at tips@hempsteadherald.com or comment on the post on our Facebook page.
