McCaskill & Blevins Fire Departments and Hempstead County Deputies were dispatched to the fire at the home of Sue Walters on Hempstead 282 South near the intersection with Highway 195 North at around 6:25 p.m., Saturday, March 18. Smoke from the fire was visible from over 10 miles away.

When the first firefighters arrived on scene, the house was already fully involved. The dual-level house was already beyond saving. The firefighters began fighting the blaze and demolishing parts of the structure that posed possible hazards. They were able to keep the fire from spreading but the house was a complete loss. The roof and floor collapsed into the basement shortly after firefighters arrived, dumping most of the fuel into the bottom of the house. The sound of ammunition stored in the house exploding rang out steadily from the flames.

Firefighters remained on scene to keep watch as the fire burned itself out.
