A Saratoga man was arrested for DWI and Fleeing Friday night after a confrontation with deputies at Saratoga Landing.
According to Sheriff James Singleton, Shannon Kraig Hurt, 38, of Saratoga was found asleep in his 97 GMC Sierra at Saratoga Landing in the 300 block of Highway 234 on Milwood Lake by Deputy Friend. When he came upon him, Deputy Friend reported Hurt as a possible drunk driver and requested other deputies at the scene. Deputies Loe and Sorensen responded to the scene.
After Deputies Loe and Sorensen arrived, Friend approached Hurt’s truck again. According to Sheriff Singleton, as Friend neared the truck, Hurt woke up and started it. Friend reported telling Hurt to stop the vehicle several times.
Sheriff Singleton said that Hurt attempted to flee in his truck, turning it toward Deputy Sorensen and accelerating. Deputy Sorensen cut him off with his truck and ordered Hurt to stop. Hurt stopped and put the truck in park.
The deputies approached the truck and ordered Hurt out of it but he didn’t comply. The deputies then opened the driver door and attempted to gain control of Hurt’s left wrist but he pulled away and began to reach back inside his truck. Sheriff Singleton reported Sorensen the got control of Hurt’s left arm, pulled him from the truck and “assisted him to the prone handcuffing position.” They were then able to handcuff Hurt without further incident.
When deputies raised Hurt to his feet, they reported observing his eyes appeared glassy and bloodshot and the smell of intoxicants was on his breath.
Hurt was placed in the back of Deputy Friend’s patrol vehicle. He was transported to the Hempstead County Detention Center where he was booked for Driving While Intoxicated and Fleeing.
